MS Project to dotProject Importer Released

Update: The new version is much better, go check it out.

Well, it's official. The MS Project to dotProject Importer is released.

This is released under GPL'd v2 which means there is no warranty expressed or implied. It is considered functionally complete as described by all customers. There are no known issues at this time, but it is strongly encouraged that you deploy this module on a test instance of your system prior to production use. During development, I failed to do this and it was painful, just trust me here. The code itself is simply an extension of the Backup module and can be installed using the same method.

Installing MS Project to dotProject Importer

Hi Keith

Thanks for that important release

I've just made the download to my PC
I have dotProject installed and working

I would like to know how to make that IMPORTER works

Thanks for any help you can provide me

Well formed XML

I made an install of this addin but when I export data to MSProject I get error that XML is not well formed. Problem i that &-sign is used in DotProject. Is it possible to use ampersand or should that just be avoided in texts or is there any future versions on the way that handle these charachers, i.e. change & -> "&(amp);"
/P

Re; Well-formed XML

This importer is built on the premise that it will be getting well-formed XML. If your XML is not well-formed from MS Project, just run a simple find & replace on it...

Installing...

It works with the dotProject Backups Module. If you install this module into dotProject like any other, it should work.

Not showing up after installation

I did what should be done to install it, but nothing is showing up.

I put the downloaded and unzipped backup folder into the modules directory, then went into dotProject Module administration. It showed up in the list with the 'install' next to it. I clicked on the install, which then put it up in the list where I could then activate it - which I did. But now nothing.

Should there be a menu item somewhere? Or, I tried going to specific URL's such as .../modules/backup/index.php or .../modules/backup/exports/msprojects/php, and just get a blank browser screen saying it's 'done'.

Any ideas?

dp Importer Update

No that should do it, but we'll be releasing an update on Monday to address some of this. Thanks for your interest.

Never mind, I found it.

I was looking for a 'Backup' in the menu list. I see it's under 'Import/Export', which I made visible and now I see it.

Installing MS Project to dotProject Importer

Thanks a lot Keith

I've installed backup module and after that installed MS Project to dotProject Importer. I had to generate a XML version from .mpp file
and use that XML version in order to import to dotProject

The import was made and everything looks fine

Thanks again

importing mpp file

So, the mpp file (MS Project) needs to be in xml format?
Is this correct? If you don't have MS Project, (which is why I am investigating dotProject) how do you get it in xml?

We receive files from other companies to view and we were hoping to not have to purchase MS Project (since we don't want to use MS Project for whatever reason you can imagine... )

I'm new to this whole project management thing. Please forgive for my lack of knowledge on this subject.
Thank you.

Problem importing xml from MS Project

Hi Casey,
Great work. We are a small company and I'd be happy to give a donation if we can get this up and running.

I currently export the MSProject file as XML and get the Line 321 error on the import module. Divisible by zero problem.

Anyway, I did some sleuthing and it seems to read the dusrations correctly but for some reason not at that line.

Any idea how to fix this? The duration is in the Prjoect export but not correctly imported.

Thanks for your assistance, this tool has great potential and I hope we can add to it.

Thanks,
Andrew

Task Owner

Is there anyway for the import to put the task owner in Dotproject?

Hey Casey - any news on the

Hey Casey - any news on the updated module? I noticed in the forums you said it would be available soon but can't seem to find the update :-(

Thanks again for all you hard work :-)

Save as XML

Yes, it has to be XML. The only ways to do it would be to save it yourself using MS Project or ask the companies to send it via XML.

Ask them to see what happens.

Question

Hi Keith

Only today I was able to look at that import in more details and as I've mentioned before it worked. The only thing that I would like to
confirm with you is that there are neither hours nor records related to Tasks Logs for the project that I've imported

Please, let me know if you have any clue why Tasks Logs were not imported

Thanks in advance

Andre

Task Logs?

Do you mean Task Logs from Microsoft Project? I wasn't aware that you could attach logs.

Task logs

I mean the hours booked on the .mpp as Actual Work.

I used the expression Task Logs because that name is where "Actual Work" are located at the DotProject ( I think )

Thanks

Actual Work

Ah, so they're not tasklogs, just consumed hours. These are not imported in any way as we simply did not know about them. Percent completion is probably more important at that point anyway.

Actual Work

Ok Keith , thanks for your response

Is it MS Project Planner

Hi
Is this code about microsoft project planner??

Thank You
Sai Krishna

Microsoft Project

I'm not familiar with "Microsoft Project Planner", but this definitely works with "Microsoft Project".

A bit of news for everyone... there will be a new version of this module released tomorrow or next week.

Instructions for MS Project to dotProject importer

I'm new to dotProject, installed it just yesterday. I downloaded the backup.zip. Now what? How do I use/configure the importer.

Thanks in advance.

How to import from ms project into dotproject custom fields

Hi; how can i import ms project fields into custom filds of dotproject. I have several fields in ms project that do not appear in dotproject when i import, so i decided to make several custom fields in dot project so that they can be imported , but i do not see how to assign them from ms project to dot project. Any help on this will be welcome

Custom Fields

Thanks for the question. This is honestly the first time I've ever had this request, so it has never been considered. Can you give me some hints on how you're using these fields?

Thanks.
